This
three-storeyed prison, constructed by
Britishers in 1906, is a pilgrim destination for freedom fighters.
This colossol edifice has mutely witnessed the most treacherous and
inhumane atrocities borne by the convicts, who were mostly Indian
freedom fighters. Now dedicated to the nation as a national memorial,
it houses spectacular Sound and Light show. It also hosts a
magnificient
Art
Gallery
and a Museum.
CellularJail, located at Port Blair, is a mute
witness to the tortures meted out to the freedom fighters for an
Independent India, who were incarcerated in this jail.This three
storeyed prison, constructed by the britishers in 1906 is popularly
known as "Pilgrim destination" for the freedom fighters. The
Jail has acquired the name "Cellular" because it is entirely
made of individual cells for the solitary confinement of the
prisoners. It originally was a seven pronged, puce coloured building
with a Central tower acting as its fluctrum and a massive structure
comprising of honey-comb like corridors. Presently only three out of
seven corridors are intact. Now, dedicated to the nation as a national
memorial, it houses spectacular Sound and Light show. It also hosts a
magnificient
Art
Gallery
and a Museum. The Jail is open on all days except Monday.
